PNG vs ICO favicon

Client

PNG favicons via link tags are the modern default. ICO remains for legacy roots and some enterprise templates. Export PNG layers here for either path.

Favicon .ico size

A classic favicon.ico file is not one pixel dimension—it bundles multiple square layers (16×16, 32×32, 48×48 px are typical). Browsers pick the best layer for the tab. This page exports PNG at one size; download 16, 32, 48 px separately if you need to build an .ico offline.

We read width and height locally, then resize with center crop. Max 8 MB.

Export size

?

Choose the pixel size your HTML link, manifest, or platform expects. Preview shows how center crop will look at that size.

Common use cases

  • Decide which format your stack needs, then export matching pixels.
  • Confirm PNG vs ICO requirements before updating HTML link tags or a CMS upload field.
  • Export a square PNG locally after upload—no server processing of your logo.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a non-square logo without padding

Center crop helps but cannot fix edge-to-edge text. Add margin before export.

  • Shipping ICO only without PNG link tags on a modern stack.

FAQ

Should I use PNG or ICO?

PNG link tags for most sites; add ICO if legacy requirements demand it.

Can I export the PNG in my browser?

Yes. Upload your image, pick the target pixel size, and download—processing stays on your device.
